The Montessori Education System is based on the works of Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian doctor. She received doctorate in medicine in 1896 and was the first lady doctor of her time. At first Dr. Montessori worked with “abnormal” children. But when the results were great, she decided to apply the technique she has developed to “normal” children. In 1907 she opened her first school “Casa Dei Bambini” for children of the slums. The results were fantastic and soon she became famous. In 1909, at insistence of her friends to “preserve the work having importance for the whole humanity”, Dr. Montessori wrote her first book “The method of Scientific Pedagogy as Applied to Infant Education and The Children's house”. This and succeeding books brought her acclaim from all around the world. From 1912 till her death in 1952, Dr. Montessori went around the world spreading her methods. She visited India from 1939 – 1946 and 1948-1949. During her tour in India she met many Indian leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Rabindranath Tagore. In 1950, in recognition for her work, Dr Montessori was nominated for noble peace prize.
