Learning: Sky is the Limit |

In a Montessori school there is no fixed syllabus. That does not mean the children just don't learn any academic material. In fact, children learn a lot and that is why there is no fixed syllabus. Each child is allowed to learn to his/her fullest potential. For example, in traditional schools, at end of nursery (age 3 ½ years) children are supposed to know A, B, C… Z, numbers 1 to 10 and so on. Even if a child is bright and knows this syllabus, the child is not allowed to learn material from Jr. KG until the child actually goes in Jr. KG. This doesn't make any sense logically if one really thinks about it. In contrast, in the Montessori school, the child is allowed and encouraged to learn as much as he or she is able to do. So it won't be surprising if a 3 ½ year child in a Montessori school is able read 3 letter words, be able to tell if number 23 is smaller or greater than number 57, or know about continents and the solar system |
Though there is no set limit on the amount of academic learning in a Montessori school, children are exposed to seven subjects. They are: Language (English and/or other language), Math, Science, Geography, Sensorial, Practical Life and Culture. This is not too much of a burden for the young children as some parents might think. In a Montessori school each child learns at his or her own pace. Also children themselves choose from a set of choices what they would like to learn on any given day. So there is no force, no spoon feeding and no memorizing. All learning happens without any stress, at the child's pace and with complete understanding. Also there is no fixed schedule to “teach” the syllabus – the child starts learning from wherever the child is on the day he or she is admitted to the school. Parents don't have to worry to “work” the missed syllabus at home or help the child with homework. |
| At Rainbow Montessori School we talk and teach in English. English reading and writing is taught phonetically. The children are also exposed to Hindi. Children learn Math by seeing concrete examples. At age 5, a child can do 4-digit addition and subtraction. In Science children learn by exploring. In Geography children learn about the continents, the solar system and the earth. The aim of Sensorial is to refine the senses of a child through various work activities. In Practical life children work on activities which are designed to build their coordination, concentration, order and independence. Finally in culture the children are exposed to music, festivals, hymns, and so on. Children learn a lot by working with educational material and a series of activities designed to facilitate maximum leaning. |
Apart from academics, children learn many soft skills like discipline, analytical and problem solving skills, self initiative, good manners and good habits. Children educated in a Montessori school are calm, assured and self confident. |
Truly, there is no limit to what a child can learn!! |
